Questions to ask communities

The tour is where a community sells itself, and the questions are where the truth comes out. This is the checklist we take on every tour, so the family can take it too.

  • How is medication managed, and what does that service cost?
  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio during the day and at night?
  • Is there a licensed nurse on site, and how many hours a day?

  • What is the staff turnover, and how do you cover shifts when someone is out?

Cost & Contract

Questions about money

  • What exactly does that price include, and what is billed separately?
  • Is there a one-time community or entrance fee, and is it refundable?
  • How often can the monthly price increase, and by how much?
  • What happens if my loved one's care needs increase? What does the next tier cost?
  • What is the notice period and policy if my loved one must leave?
  • Do you accept Medicaid, long-term care insurance, or VA benefits?
  • Can I have the full contract and the fee schedule in writing before deciding?

Lifestyle & Safety

Questions about daily life

  • What does a typical day look like, and what activities are offered?
