The Three Settings

Independent living is apartment living with meals, housekeeping, and activities, for people who need little or no daily assistance.

Assisted living adds hands-on help with daily activities: bathing, dressing, meals, and medication, with care available around the clock.

Memory care is a secure, specialized setting for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, with trained staff and a structured environment.

What the monthly price actually includes

The advertised monthly price is rarely the whole story. The questions checklist gets the real numbers; here is what to look for in every price.

  • Level-of-care tiers. The base price covers a baseline; higher care needs add monthly fees.
  • Community fees. Many communities charge a one-time entrance or community fee on top of rent.
  • What is included. Meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and activities are not always included.
  • Medication management. Often an add-on fee, and one of the most common surprises.

Across Maryland, Virginia & DC

Across Maryland, Virginia, and DC, pricing tends to track the local real estate market: DC and close-in Maryland suburbs run higher, while parts of Virginia and outer Maryland run lower. The same community brand can price differently in different counties.

The practical rule: compare communities on the same basis. Ask each one for the same level of care, the same apartment size, and the same included services, and put the answers in writing.
